Eye examinations

If you are a UK resident, you can get a free NHS eye examination in Scotland. This is not just to test your sight - it's a thorough examination to:

  • check the health of your eyes
  • find any eye problems before they become more serious
  • to look for signs of other health problems.

At McFarlanes and Nicol's opticians we feel the eye examination is the most important part of your visit to the practice. We set aside at least 30 minutes for each consultation, allowing us the required time to carry out all necessary procedures. The consulting rooms contain the latest equipment including fundus cameras allowing us to take retinal photographs, visual field screeners and tonometers. We also offer coloured overlay assessment to help with visual stress and dyslexia-type symptoms and colour vision testing.

You should be aware that if you are over the age of 60 you will be offered eye drops as part of your eye exam to dilate your pupils. These drops can make your vision blurred for a few hours and can leave you sensitive to light. We advise you do not drive until your vision is back to normal (which usually takes 3-4hours) and you may find bringing a pair of sunglasses to your eye exam useful.

For more information visit the Scottish Government website and search for "Eye Examination".
